7 on 7 off: how the schedule trades seven straight shifts for a full week off

7 on 7 off is a 14-day cycle: seven 12-hour shifts in a row, then seven days off. The cycle is exactly two weeks long, so it locks to the calendar and your work week and off week never trade places. The full week off is the draw. The seven straight shifts are the price.

We make Lumical, an app that scans work rosters into your calendar, so read this with that in mind. Everything below is calendar math you can check on our free shift pattern visualizer.

How the 7 on 7 off schedule works

Seven 12-hour shifts is 84 hours per cycle, which averages 42 hours a week. The average hides the shape. Depending on which weekday your block starts, the two calendar weeks of the cycle split those 84 hours as 84 and 0, or 72 and 12, and so on down to an even 48 and 36. No single week is a 42-hour week. Only the pair averages to one.

DriftNone. The cycle fits the week exactly

The 7 on 7 off shift pattern shows up where coverage cannot stop and handovers are expensive, mostly hospitals and plants that run around the clock. One crew holds the ground for a full week, then hands everything over once, instead of passing the baton every second day.

Why 7 days on 7 days off never moves

Fourteen divides evenly by seven. That one arithmetic fact fixes your whole year: whichever weekday your block starts on, it starts on that same weekday in every cycle. Work Monday to Sunday this rotation and you will work Monday to Sunday until the roster itself changes. Compare 4 on 4 off, whose 8-day cycle slides one weekday per round and walks your shifts through the entire week.

The lock cuts both ways on weekends. A seven-day block covers each weekday exactly once, so every cycle you work exactly one Saturday and one Sunday. On most start days the two sit in the same weekend: one weekend of the cycle is fully worked, the other is fully free, and you keep every other weekend forever. A block that starts on a Sunday splits them instead. The worked Sunday belongs to one weekend and the worked Saturday to the next, so neither weekend of the cycle survives whole. Your start day settles this once, permanently. The 7 on 7 off calendar for 2026 counts the exact weekends off for any start day, and the 2027 calendar is ready when your roster rolls over.

The week off is the draw, the seven shifts are the price

A complete week off, every other week, is the part people stay for. A whole trip fits inside an ordinary off week. So does anything that needs five weekdays in a row, like a course or a house move.

The price is the block. Seven consecutive shifts is as long a stretch as common rosters run, and this one runs it at 12 hours a shift: 84 hours of work in seven days. Days five through seven tend to be work and sleep and not much else.

Nights add one more cost. The last night of the block ends the next morning, so the first day of your week off is a recovery day: you get home in the morning and sleep through most of it. That is the Friday night rule applied to day eight. Seven days off on paper, six you can really use.

Baylor, the weekend-only cousin

Baylor is the same trade pushed to its limit. A Baylor crew works two 12-hour shifts, every Saturday and Sunday, locked to those two days all year, and exists so the weekday crews can keep their weekends. How it pays varies by employer and contract, so check yours before assuming anything. The Baylor calendar for 2026 lays out its year the same way.

Where an app earns its place

Fair is fair: a clean 7 on 7 off is about the easiest rotation there is to keep in your head. Week on, week off, no drift. If rosters never deviated you would not need us. They deviate. You cover two days of a colleague’s week, or a training day lands mid-block, and the version in your head quietly parts ways with the printed grid. Lumical reads a photo of that grid and files every shift on the correct day, overnight spillover included. You review everything it found before it saves.
