A shift pattern planner has one job: show you the year you are about to live, not the two weeks printed at the top of the roster. Most rotations look fine in a two-week sample. What matters only shows up at full length: which weekends survive, and how much of your time off is really sleep.

What a shift pattern planner should show you
Four things. A two-week grid shows none of them.
The whole year at a glance. A rotation is a cycle, and a cycle only reveals itself against the 7-day week over months. Any pattern whose length is not a multiple of 7 lands on different weekdays as the year goes on, so you want all 52 weeks on one screen.
Drift. 4 on 4 off is an 8-day cycle, one day longer than a week, so every block starts one weekday later than the last. The alignment only repeats after 56 days, the smallest number both 8 and 7 divide into. DuPont is the opposite case: 28 days, exactly four weeks, so whatever weekdays your crew starts on, it keeps them all year. Drift spreads the good and bad weekends across every crew. A locked pattern deals them out once and never reshuffles.
Weekends that survive. A full weekend off means no shift touches Saturday or Sunday. Note “touches”: a Friday night shift ends Saturday morning, so it spoils a weekend that looks free on paper. That one detail is worth its own read: the Friday night rule.
Recovery days. The first off day after a night shift is mostly sleep. On 4 on 4 off nights, one of your four off days is a recovery day, every single cycle. A planner that paints all off days the same color is lying to you a little.
How to compare two work shift patterns before taking a job
Say you are choosing between a 4 on 4 off role and a DuPont one. Both average 42 hours a week, so the headline number cannot separate them. The cycles can.

DuPont’s famous week off is real, but the cycle pays for it: seven nights per cycle for everyone, plus a lone off day wedged between a day block and a night block. 4 on 4 off never hands you more than four days off in a row, but the rhythm is identical every cycle. Neither is better. They suit different lives.
For weekends, do not trust averages, and do not trust this post either. Look up your actual start position: the 4 on 4 off calendar for 2026 and the DuPont calendar for 2026 draw the full year and count the surviving weekends for every crew.
A shift schedule simulator for two people
The hardest planning question is not your own roster. It is yours against your partner’s. Two schedules rarely share a rhythm: 4 on 4 off next to a Monday to Friday job only repeats its alignment every 56 days, so a good stretch of shared days off gets followed by a drought, and gut feeling cannot tell you when. Days off together overlays two patterns and marks the days you are both actually free, night-shift spillover counted. Run it before one of you accepts a new rotation, not after.

A planner you look at once and forget is not a planner.
